In class today 11 February 2011

I feel like 45 minutes is really short for our lecture. What do you guys think?

Today - Parts of speech: Just basics
N = singular + plural
V = pres, pas, third form participle, progressive
Adj = comparative + superlative degrees
Adv = most end with -ly and describe how the action was/is done
Prep = relation between of parts in the sentence
Conj = joins parts of speech, sentences & paragraphs together.
Gerunds = verbal-nouns
Interrogative markers = WH Questions
Det = eg that (not a demonstrative pronoun)
Auxilliary = helping verbs/modals
Negative markers = Not, never,
Intensifiers = very, so
Intersections = Exclamatory expressions - Oh! Eish!
Auxiliary Verbs (be, have, must)
Q: in class: Why do we say more beautiful and not beautifuler/est?
A: Number of syllables in a word - ie one (in some occasions though rare, two) syllable words need suffixes and two or more syllable words need prefixes. Noted that adding affixes to any part of speech changes meaning and form.
